Sandakphu Overview

Sandakphu is a lovely spot in West Bengal, close to the Indo-Nepal border and the Singalila National Park. The highest point in the state of West Bengal is Sandakphu Peak. Sandakphu was once regarded as a hiker’s paradise, but it is increasingly gaining popularity among regular tourists. It is becoming more accessible with the construction of new roads up to Gairibas, which is roughly halfway to the Sandakphu trek. We expect more tourists to flock to Sandakphu as its popularity develops across the country.

The Himalayas run through the northern half of West Bengal, giving good chances for mountaineering and adventure sports. The Sandakphu Phalut hike is suitable for novices or those with only a moderate amount of trekking expertise. This Sandakphu Phalut walk allows you to cross the border into Nepal and then return to India through a twisting track. Your eyes will feast on sights of sky-touching mountains covered in snow for the majority of your journey.

About Sandakphu Trek

Sandakphu hiking is one of the most well-known treks in West Bengal, as well as one of the best treks in Eastern India. With a height of 3638 meters, it is Bengal’s highest point (11935 ft). Sandakphu depicts the raw, natural splendor of the snow. The vista from the top is definitely worth the effort it takes to reach there, and nature is at its most beautiful here. The summit, aptly titled Trekkers’ Paradise, is a spectacular position from which one can see four of the world’s five tallest peaks in a constantly snow-covered arc: Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, and Lhotse. The walk is rather easy and may be done by anyone in reasonable physical condition, whether young or old.

Trek Highlights

Beginning with the Rhododendrons and magnolias in the spring, the walk takes you through firm golden sceneries in the autumn, and eventually, the moderate white backdrop of winter. In different seasons, you can see how the views, landscapes, flora, and animals change.

Starting in the east, the peaks of Sikkim can be seen, followed by the massive Kanchenjunga, and farther west, Mount Everest can be seen from Sandakphu, as well as several other peaks bordering Tibet.

The view from the top is wide enough to fill two frames. One of these is the well-known “Sleeping Buddha. The Everest group is the other. The mountains of Bhutan and Sikkim to your right, facing straight ahead north, are Kanchenjunga.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: NJP/ Bagdogra To Kopidana

We’ll pick you up from Bagdogra Airport or the NJP railway station today and drive you 85 kilometers uphill to Kopidana, our base camp at 6,500 feet. This will be a 6-kilometer trip through tea gardens and local villages in West Bengal and Sikkim. As you approach Kopidana, you will progressively gain altitude. Meet our agents at the airport or railway station when you arrive in NJP/ Bagdogra. While driving to Kopidana, have your breakfast. Kopidana is a little mountain hamlet that is shrouded in mist and fog most of the time. Kopidana has a very relaxing atmosphere, and the area is so quiet that you will be entirely immersed in the tranquility of the mountains. The Secure Travels hike package does not include breakfast or lunch.

Day 2: Kopidana To Tumling
We begin our journey in Kopidana, a less-frequented yet lovely basecamp settlement for hikes in West Bengal. After breakfast, we set off on a 5- to 6-hour journey that included a variety of ascents. On the way, a hot lunch will be provided. Whether you are an Indian or a foreigner with an Indian visa, there are rarely any limitations on entering the country. It’s even more of a motorway from other points of entry to Tumling. In this mountain parish, roughly ten to twelve Nepali families operate teahouse lodgings for trekkers throughout the year. There are also a number of private lodges and huts in the area, which contribute to the services accessible to tourists and trekkers.

Day 3 : Tumling To Kalapokhri
Another stunning sunrise awaits us on the Sanndakphu Trek on the morning of our third day, when we wake up in Tumling. The great Sleeping Buddha gleams sublimely across the sky, bathed in the first rays of the sun. If the sky is clear and the view starts your day in the correct mood, the full set of Kanchenjunga peaks emerges. The Kanchenjunga is flanked on two sides by the Kumbhakarna and Shimbho peaks, so keep an eye out for these in the background. The peaks of Goecha, the Kabru group of peaks, Rathong, Koktang, and Frey can all be seen in the foreground. You can also track the Goecha La hollow somewhere along the frontline peaks of another of our favorite Sikkim treks. Today, we begin our trek to Kalapokhri by passing through the lovely woodlands of Singalila National Park. A motor road leading to Nepal’s interior runs near our trekking track, which we frequently see. The walk from Tumling begins with a steady ascent lasting 1.5 hours, followed by a 45-minute drop, and then a sharp ascent lasting roughly an hour that leads to Gairibasa. When the rhododendrons and magnolias are in full bloom, the woodlands of Singalika National Park are known for their riotous summer colors.

Day 4: Kalapokhri To Sandakphu

For individuals who are physically healthy, the trail from Kalipokhri to Sandakphu should be a simple trip. The track begins with a gentle elevation that lasts approximately 30 minutes, then transitions to a steeper climb that lasts about an hour before ending on a meandering highway. It’ll be a 3-hour trek spanning roughly 6 kilometers. As you approach the lowlands of Bikheybhanjang, you will be greeted by a panoramic view of the Sandakphu summit. It’s another 4 kilometers up a zigzagging path from here. After an hour of climbing, the vistas of Sandakphu are marked with teahouses and shelters. The vision of Sleeping Buddha that had been with you on and off throughout the walk now stands out in front of you, and the Three Sisters peaks can be seen to the north. At certain spots in Sandakphu, you may be able to connect to a mobile network.

Day 5: Sandakphu To Sepi
Today is the first day of our descent from the peaks. We prepare for our descent to village Sepi in West Bengal after seeing a soul-stirring sunrise over the breathtaking peak panorama, one of the best discovered on trekking in India. This will be the most difficult trek of the entire tour, but the descent will make it easier. However, we must get up early in order to arrive in Sepi before sunset. Today’s trail will take us through a different kind of forest, one of bamboo, which is home to Red Pandas and Bears. At mid-afternoon, a winding forest track will lead us to Gurdum, where we will be served a sumptuous meal. We will come across the magnificent Sri River, also known as Sri Khola in the local dialect. In the afternoon, we will arrive in Sepi after crossing a wooden bridge over a stream. Sepi is a mountain hamlet with enthralling surroundings, which are enhanced by the Sri Khola River. The folks are incredibly nice and welcoming to visitors.

Day 6. Sepi /Dayuuyid

We board this morning, heading towards NJP, after spending the night in the lovely idyll of Sepi. While the drive is long, it travels via gorgeous routes that are rich in natural beauty. Keep your cameras ready to catch the final moments of the scenery. Because the scheduled arrival time at NJP station is around 2 p.m., you can arrange a night train/flight home on the 6th day, making Sandakphu suitable for a long weekend excursion.
