Pangarchulla Overview

Pangarchulla, at 4,690 meters above sea level, serves as an amphitheater for the entire Garhwal Range and is suitable for experiencing the high mountains at a moderate height. It has to be one of the few Himalayan peaks that introduce you to challenges other than those related to altitude, with just the right amount of effort and beautiful vistas. The Pangarchulla and Kauri Pass tracks remain unmodified until the last day. As you drive to Dhak, the trailhead for this stunning mountain, which rests atop a dense pine forest, you get an unimpeded view of Nanda Devi to your left and the crown of Pangarchulla to your right.

The Pangarchulla trip brings you to an array of scenery performing all kinds of magic in a very short time, from little communities to dust trails leading to large open meadows, lush forests, clean streams, and rocky areas going into the white of the snow. Not to mention the numerous respectful peaks that you will see along the way, all of which are steeped in historical significance and climbing tales.

About Pangarchulla Trek

The optimal time to conduct this expedition is an intriguing aspect of it. Pangarchulla Peak, at 15,000 feet, receives so much snow throughout the winters that it takes 5 to 6 months for the snow to melt. As a result, April or September are the finest months to embark on this adventure.

The topography of Pangarchulla is characterized by big rocks with large gaps between them, making trekking extremely challenging. However, during the months of April and September, a heavy covering of snow aids us in traversing the boulders. Even so, an experienced trekker is required to accompany you during the journey.

Don’t you want to try something new? Yes, this journey is that thrilling.

Trek Highlights

Despite being at a relatively low altitude, it has the power to upset even the most experienced climbers’ confidence. You might wonder why that is. In both seasons (Nov-Dec vs Mar-Apr), Pangarchulla confronts you with different but equally exciting obstacles, offering you a taste of various terrain and challenges

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Drive From Rishikesh To Joshimath

Rishikesh is a well-known pilgrimage destination in India, and you will be picked up at Rishikesh Reporting Place (near Laxmanjhula Auto Stand). At 6:00 a.m., we will meet you here and begin our journey. We’ll get started early even though we have nothing else planned for the day. This is because you need to give your body enough time to recover before starting your walk the next day, and mountain roads are unpredictable, so the more time we have, the better.
We will follow Ganga’s course to Joshimath, passing through the famous river-bank pilgrim cities of Rishikesh and the 5 Prayags or confluences. Those interested in staying here for a few days before the walk can reserve a room here and we will pick you up on the way to Joshimath.

Day 2: Joshimath To Dhak And Trek To Gulling Top Grand Mountain Views

After breakfast at the guesthouse, we will depart for Dhak village at 7 a.m. the next day. The trek will begin in Dhak. The 40-minute trip from Joshimath to Dhak will take you through the mountain kingdom that surrounds the town. After breakfast, load your belongings into the van and we’ll go for Dhak. The journey is brief yet beautiful. During your ride, take in the first views of the Nanda Devi summit. Gather your supplies and begin the walk at the Dhak roadhead, which marks the uphill bend toward the goal. 1-hour trek to the first village The walk begins on a motorable road and then continues on a stone-paved trail up the mountain for the next half hour. The trail progressively ascends, keeping the settlement to the right, on a dusty, rocky climb with gentle ascents. You’ll pass through mountain settlements like Kharchi and Tugasi, which will give you an insight into the quirks of mountain life, their reliance on nature, and their strong relationship with it. We reach Kharchi village without difficulty, where the trail ascends through gushing waterfalls. Enjoy the lush greenery of the farming steps that cut through hills and the majestic mountains that tower over you from all sides. The slow ascent must be accompanied by careful planning.

Day 3: Trek From Gulling Top To Camp

The location is Camp 1 is located in a clearing surrounded by blue pine, oak, and rhododendron trees. While the climb is climbing, it is not as difficult as the one the day before. We left after breakfast today, psychologically prepared for a moderate hike. There will be many water sources. The trail will be muddy throughout. There are no significant mountain views because the trail is surrounded by deep forest. On the majority of today’s walk, you will be flanked on both sides by oak woodlands. Continue on the forested trail until you arrive at Camp. Rhododendrons flowering in thickets of pink and crimson seem to make the woodlands smile up and down. Snow begins to appear a short distance within the woodland trail. Pangarchulla is a deep snow trek due to the dense growth of Silver Birch and Spruce above the snow-covered forest floor. Camp-1 is reached late in the day. After today’s difficult journey, lunch tastes even better. The afternoons and evenings can be used to acclimate and take leisurely walks around the clearing. The acclimatization walk will take you to Khullara Meadows, which will take around 40 minutes.

Day 4: Trek From Camp To Kuari Pass Via Khullara And Back To Camp

We set out after breakfast with a packed lunch from Camp, skirting the forest areas towards Kuari Top, where the panorama transforms from tree-covered gloomy pathways to open meadows around 40 minutes in. After another hour, you reach the Khullara summit and continue Lord Curzon’s track to Kuari Pass. Three routes lead out of Khullara: one leads downhill to Tali, another leads uphill to Pangarchulla and the third leads downhill to Kuari Pass. We’ll use the Kuari Pass route. By way of a woodland ridge, Khullara is connected to Lord Curzon’s trail. After 20 minutes on the Lord Curzon trail, the open Gelgad meadows will be visible.

Day 5: Trek From Camp To Pangarchulla Summit
We start early in the morning on this big day, at the crack of dawn, and set out on fresh snow for the summit hike. Because there are no water sources nearby, you must bring at least 2 liters of water with you. This section is difficult due to the several steep climbing points along the road. The first 30 minutes of the ascent are spent climbing a long ridge, which will be over when you see Pangarchulla Main and auxiliary peaks rising up ahead. The colorful sunlight on the left will bolster your confidence while the ascent is difficult. Above you, in the middle, you can see a snow gully; this is the location you must reach. Your party may need to manually chop through the thick carpet of snow in this location and further up, an exhausting chore entrusted to the leader. The snow normally melts in May and June, leaving a carpet of rocks behind. Your foot may travel deep in relation to the rocks below at times. Enjoy this level snow patch before reaching the base of Pangarchulla Main for a fantastically detailed perspective of the Chaukhamba massif, surrounded by Mana, Kamet, Hati-Ghodi, and other snow caps. Trekkers are asked not to request sliding because it is risky on these slopes.

Day 6: Trek From Camp To Dhak Village And Drive To Joshimath

The snow peaks will fade out of view as you descend from Camp, and the same old village trails will remind you of the journey’s finish. Dhak village is a short distance away. Our first campsite will be reached after an hour and a half of trekking through dense forest cover, and Dhak will be reached after another hour and a half. A car ride into the dusk from Dhak will return you to civilization at the Joshimath guest house. In Joshimath, stay for dinner and the night.

Day 7: Drive From Joshimath To Rishikesh

We return to the city today after sleeping off the incredible experience of scaling Pangarchulla. At 6 a.m., your vehicle will be waiting for you. After saying your goodbyes to the hills, you will descend to civilization, arriving in Haridwar by 6 p.m. in time for your nocturnal journey back. Mother Nature will be your constant companion on the way back from Joshimath. If you want to arrange your next trip on the same day, make your reservations after 7 p.m.
