Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Rishikesh to Joshimath

Your journey with us will begin in Rishikesh. We shall begin our journey from Rishikesh’s designated collection place (Rishikesh railway station) on the famed Badrinath Road.

If you enjoy cultural touring and adventure water activities, you might want to consider staying in Rishikesh for a few days. The ten-hour drive to Joshimath will undoubtedly be lengthy and exhausting, but there will never be a shortage of breathtaking scenery. As we make our way uphill, the vast river that runs parallel to us will become more wild and intriguing. We’ll pass through Ganga-Devaprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Nandaprayag, and Vishnuprayag, the panchprayag of the five holy confluences. So, have your cameras handy and stay awake for the most of the drive!

Day 2: Joshimath to Gulling top

At Joshimath, we’ll be greeted with a slew of ice peaks, which will be far more inviting this morning than they were in the dusk of our first day at base camp. On this day, after an early breakfast, we will travel to Dhak hamlet in the Joshimath tehsil, a 45-minute rocky journey. Our journey will begin from here. On this drive, keep an eye out for the gentle slopes of Joshimath’s Sleeping Lady Mountain. This mountain’s gentle ups and downs appear to resemble the outline of a lying lady.

The hike begins at Dhak and climbs steadily. The dirt path diverges from the main road and ascends to Tugasi settlement. On this trail, there are a few of steep T-turns before the walk begins on level terrain and gradually ascends soft slopes. Here, the terrain is largely rugged. There is no abundance of vegetation if you exclude the terrace agricultural regions, but it does provide a panoramic picture of the Garhwal boundary all around. Look out for the Vishnugad Tapovan Hydroelectric Power Station and the dazzling silvery sun-dazed Dhaull-Ganga stream snaking its way through the abyss. There isn’t expected to be any snow in this area.

After around 20 to 25 minutes on the trail, you’ll arrive in the settlement of Kharch, where you may refill your bottles and stop. The track continues on the same rocky path from the settlement, maintaining the valley to the left. The ascent is uneventful, with only a few switchback turns before reaching the Lower Tugasi region. The trail splits here, and you must choose the one curving along a hydro-powered flour mill. In about 10 minutes, you’ll arrive in the Upper Tugasi region, which is defined by a few wheat fields, flower gardens, and thatched roofed cottages.

Day 3:  Gulling top to Tali forest camp

Get up early the next morning to begin a 5-hour excursion further into Talli’s forest. After the strenuous ascent of the previous day, today’s hike will be easier. The ascending grades are very gentle, making for a pleasant trip. After 20 minutes on the trail, you’ll reach a green clearing with views of the majestic snow peaks. After a brief pause, the climb continues across a small stream into a mixed woodland that gradually thickens with oaks and rhododendrons. If you visit in late March, you may still be able to see some white and pink blossoms. Apart from rhododendrons, walnuts and other coniferous trees can be found here.

Day 4: Tali forest camp to Kuari pass and back via Khullara top

The summit day is the fourth day, which will likely last 10-11 hours depending on the group’s speed. On the ridges today, you’ll need to dress adequately for high snow and squalling wind.

There will be no water sources along the road today, so bring enough to get you through. The hike will begin by ascending to the peak of Khullara, a 3.5-kilometer moderate elevation. You’ll have to cross a broken bridge and a frozen creek in the dead of winter, then ascend a ridge to the high pass, which is extremely difficult and made more difficult by the snow. You are welcome to take a 15-minute break to gather your breath.

You can take a long break at Jhandi Dhar, a suitable rest stop 2 hours into the climb. Lunch will be eaten on the route or after arriving at the temple at the Kuari high pass’s base.

Make sure your shoes are appropriately cramped. Although Trek the Himalayas will give you with high-quality crampons, you must bring your own gaiters. Gaiters can also be purchased at Joshimath’s market at a reasonable price.

Day 5: Tali forest camp- Joshimath via Gurson bugyal & Auli

Today, we’ll travel to Auli, India’s skiing capital and one of the most well-known in South Asia. We’ll take a wonderfully enjoyable ride down to Auli, exploring the lovely snow-covered undulating slopes of Gorson Bugyal.

The Bugyals of Gorson can be traversed without any strenuous or time-consuming climbs, as they are mostly on a smooth undulating terrain, though the snow of high winter may make the area a little lonesome. Skiing is a popular activity during the thaw season in March.

A cable car trip from Auli to Joshimath will take you above the gorgeous ski resort, the gently undulating snow-covered slopes, and the browning pine forest borders.
