Chopta Chandrashila Tungnath Trek Overview

The highest Shiva temple in the world is reached by the Tungnath Trek, which adds a hint of holiness. The temple, known as Tungnath, is located at a height of 12,073 feet above sea level, about 2 kilometers below Chandrashila Peak, and has a special place in the holy Panch Kedar circuit. Since the temple has many idols of Lord Shiva, it is not just for pious pilgrims. Known as the “Mini Switzerland of India,” Chopta is a densely populated area with breathtaking views and verdant meadows. In addition to being a trekkers’ physical journey, the Tungnath trek is a pilgrimage site that has been incorporated into many  cultures as it comprises many ancient intangible civilizations.

The Tungnath Chandrashila Trek might be the break you need. As you walk along the trail, you’ll pass through thick forests filled with rhododendron trees and rocky paths that feel like a walk into nature’s heart.

But it’s not just a trek—it’s an experience that keeps pulling you in.
With every step, you’ll see snow-covered peaks like Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, and Kedar Dome popping up on the skyline. It feels unreal. The forest slowly opens up to views that look straight out of a wallpaper. You’ll also spot birds and animals along the way—perfect for anyone who enjoys photography or simply observing wildlife.

If you’re looking for a journey that feels refreshing and meaningful, this trek delivers.
It pulls you deep into the Garhwal mountains, far away from crowds and closer to peace.

Altitude and Height of Tungnath Trek

The Tungnath Temple, the highest Shiva temple in the world, is 3,680 meters (12,073 feet) above sea level. The Tungnath Trek begins at Chopta, which is about 2,680 meters (8,790 feet) above sea level. Difficulty level of Tungnath Trek

The Tungnath Chandrashila Trek Trek is considered an easy to moderate level trek, making it suitable for beginners, families, and even kids with decent fitness. . The well-paved, gently inclining trail from Chopta to Tungnath is roughly 3.5 km long in one direction. The 1.5-kilometer final stretch from Tungnath to Chandrashila is steeper and can be difficult, particularly in the rain or snow, but it is doable if you move slowly and steadily. All things considered, it’s among Uttarakhand’s most accessible high-altitude hikes for beginners.

Best Time and Essentials for Tungnath Trek

The Tungnath Trek is best experienced between April and November because it is inappropriate to hike in the bitter cold when the area is covered in snow. Proper footwear, warm clothing, and enough water are essential for a successful expedition. The most striking aspect of climbing the Tungnath is the incredibly peaceful fusion of spirituality and nature. There is something for everyone to enjoy that has a lasting effect, regardless of whether you are a serious hiker, simply enjoy the outdoors, or are on a pilgrimage.

 Key highlights of Tungnath Trek

Tungnath Temple – World’s Highest Shiva Temple

Tungnath is regarded as the world’s highest Shiva temple, rising to a height of about 3,680 meters. This historic temple is thought to be more than a millennium old and is a part of the revered Panch Kedar pilgrimage circuit. The journey to Tungnath is a profoundly spiritual one in addition to a physical one. Its untamed Himalayan scenery, snow-capped background, and peaceful vibrations appeal to both trekkers and devotees. It provides an unparalleled spiritual experience that lingers long after the trek is over, with the chants of “Har Har Mahadev” resonating through the mountains.

Chandrashila Peak – Stunning Sunrises & Panoramic Views

Chandrashila Peak – Stunning Sunrises & Panoramic Views

Tungnath is not the end of the journey. At a height of roughly 4,000 meters, Chandrashila Peak awaits those who continue 1.5 kilometers. Chandrashila, which is well-known for its surreal 360-degree view of the Himalayas, rewards early risers with a golden sunrise that illuminates some of the most magnificent peaks, such as Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, and Kedarnath. The entire mountain range seems to be bowing to the sun at this precise moment. The once-in-a-lifetime view that awaits you at the top makes the somewhat steep climb well worth the effort.

Amazing Vegetation and Wildlife – A Natural Paradise

Amazing biodiversity abounds on the Chopta–Tungnath–Chandrashila trail. It is like strolling through a living botanical garden as you trek through the verdant meadows and thick forests of oak, pine, and rhododendron. Red rhododendrons bloom along the trail in the spring. Pheasants, Himalayan Monals, and other local species are visible to birdwatchers. Sometimes you might even see musk deer or mountain foxes. Since the whole area is part of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, it’s more than just a hike—it’s an immersive ecological experience.

Cultural Experience – Sacred Trails & Village Life

The profound cultural significance of the Tungnath Trek is what sets it apart. You get a taste of traditional mountain life as you travel through isolated Garhwali villages. The Himalayan way of life, which is based on simplicity, faith, and nature, is revealed by the welcoming locals, modest dwellings, and centuries-old temples along the route. The legends of the Mahabharata and the mythology associated with the temples of Panch Kedar give the trek deeper significance than mere adventure. The journey gains depth as a result of this cultural immersion, becoming more than just picturesque.

Chopta – Mini Switzerland of India

chandrashila peak

Chopta, the base camp for the Tungnath trek, is often dubbed the “Mini Switzerland of India” for its lush meadows, alpine forests, and snow-draped peaks in the backdrop. Located at around 2,600–2,800 meters above sea level, Chopta is a pristine, offbeat destination that hasn’t been overrun by commercial tourism yet. Whether you’re camping under a starry sky, walking through the misty trails, or just soaking in the silence of the mountains, Chopta offers a peaceful retreat from fast-paced city life. It’s the perfect place to begin the trek or even to just relax and connect with nature.

What our Clients Say About Us

Priyanshi Bhatt Felt like two worlds in one trek

I went to tungnath chandrshila and it was a wholesome experience from camping to trekking and enjoying the sunset. The guide was amazing , friendly and helpful. He even took us to the devprayag sangam and god oh god seeing the calm alaknanda and the strong bhagirathi was the best start of the journey. We stayed in camps and it was my first camping experience and I loved it....❤️ Snow treks are difficult but with our guide it was easy. Thank you.... secure travels 🤗

Venkata Shiva Krishna Govindu Perfect first Himalayan trek.

Recent trip to Chopta tungnath with Secure Travels was amazing as the accommodation provided at chopta base camp was really great and the food was also decent. Special mention to Sachin bhai and Ankit bhai as they are very friendly and making the group in full of fun mode. All the other people who were doing the trek were also very chill and making it a memorable trip. Though there are some places which can improved like trekking gear rental can be provided by the Secure Travels itself, this can be sorted by the upcoming treks from them. I definitely recommend people to plan a trip with Secure Travels.

Pooja Rani

Our recent Trip "Chopta tungnath Deoriatal and chandrasheela trek" was an incredible experience! The trip was well-organized, and every aspect of it was thoroughly enjoyable. What made the trip truly special, however, were the people we met along the way. Our fellow travelers and the locals we encountered were all incredibly kind, warm, and welcoming. Of course, no journey is without its challenges. The constant climbing on the mountains did take a toll on us, but our guide was instrumental in keeping us motivated and supported throughout(although he is also feeling a li'l bit frustrated at several times 😂). It was also wonderful to see the company owner present, motivating us and ensuring everything ran smoothly. Thank you for an unforgettable experience! I look forward to joining another trip in future🥰.
